Amber Cove, a bustling cruise port on the Dominican Republic’s picturesque north coast, has marked a significant milestone in its journey towards sustainability and environmental stewardship. With the unveiling of a new solar park featuring over 1,800 solar panels, Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest cruise company, demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to reducing the carbon footprint of its operations. This strategic move is expected to cater to 80% of the port's energy requirements, aligning with broader commitments to leverage renewable energy sources across its global destinations.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by key figures such as Joel Santos, Minister of the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, and Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, celebrated this landmark achievement. This initiative is not only a testament to Carnival's dedication to environmental sustainability but also positions Amber Cove as a leader in renewable energy adoption among cruise terminals on a national level. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels, this solar park is projected to slash greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1,000 tons annually, an effort equivalent to planting over 30,000 trees.
Amber Cove, located near the historic town of Puerto Plata, is renowned for its rich culture, scenic beauty, and diverse shore excursion offerings. The cruise port, one of eight premier destinations owned and operated by Carnival Corporation, spans 25 acres and is frequented by four of the company’s cruise lines - Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, and Princess Cruises. This site offers guests an array of amenities, from dining and shopping to adventure activities like ziplining and snorkeling. The inauguration of the solar park further accentuates the destination's appeal, blending modern infrastructure with environmental consciousness.
Beyond the solar park, Carnival Corporation has consistently demonstrated its commitment to sustainability across its operations. Initiatives range from enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing waste onboard its fleet to investing in liquefied natural gas as an alternative energy source. Moreover, Carnival Corporation’s dedication to eliminating single-use plastics and minimizing food waste onboard reflects its holistic approach toward environmental responsibility. This strategic direction not only benefits the marine and coastal ecosystems but also ensures a more sustainable cruising experience for guests.
