In a bold move to upgrade its guests' onboard experience, MSC Cruises has officially announced its plans to outfit its entire fleet with SpaceX’s advanced satellite internet system, Starlink, by May 2024. This initiative promises to revolutionize the way passengers connect and share their oceanic journeys, addressing the increasing demand for high-speed, reliable internet at sea. The decision follows successful trials that began with MSC Magnifica in December 2022, showcasing the system’s capability to meet the bandwidth and data traffic needs of today’s cruise travelers.
Currently, over two-thirds of MSC Cruises’ ships are equipped with Starlink, including popular vessels such as MSC Divina, MSC Euribia, and MSC Grandiosa, among others. The company aims to finalize the installation on the remaining ships, including MSC Opera and MSC World Europa, in the forthcoming weeks, ensuring that the remaining fleet members are ready well before the start of the summer 2024 season. This upgrade caters not only to guest connectivity but also enhances the operational aspects of the cruise line, including technical and safety systems.
To cater to different user needs, MSC Cruises offers tailored Wi-Fi packages for its guests. The 'Browse Internet Cruise Package' is designed for basic internet usage such as surfing and emailing, while the 'Browse & Stream Cruise Package' supports more data-intensive activities, including video streaming on platforms like Netflix and music streaming services. These packages are available with up to a 20% discount when booked in advance, making high-speed internet access more affordable for everyone onboard.
With the industry-wide shift towards improved onboard connectivity, MSC Cruises joins other major operators like Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Corporation, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in the Starlink adoption. This upgrade is expected to set a new standard in maritime internet speeds and reliability, offering guests an onshore-like internet experience even in the most remote oceanic regions. The incorporation of Starlink is a testament to MSC Cruises' commitment to innovation and enhancing the passenger experience.
The adoption of high-speed, reliable internet at sea represents a pivotal moment in the cruise industry, bridging the gap between sea-based and land-based vacations. Now, passengers can seamlessly connect with family, work remotely, or stream their favorite content without the typical limitations of maritime connectivity. MSC Cruises' fleet-wide rollout of Starlink by May 2024 not only elevates the onboard experience but also positions cruising as a compelling, modern vacation choice that doesn’t compromise on connectivity.
