Royal Caribbean International has made a significant alteration to the itinerary of its Ultimate World Cruise, embarking on an exceptional journey across Africa and Europe, following a unique onboard vote. Due to rising concerns about safety in the Red Sea region, passengers aboard the Serenade of the Seas were presented with an alternative route that would navigate around Africa, bypassing the troubled waters. This pivotal decision has resulted in the cruise setting sail from Dubai to Italy via South Africa, encompassing a 43-night segment that showcases 18 enchanting ports of call across Africa and Europe, including the Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, and more.

The decision to reroute came after passengers were given five days to vote on their preferred course of action, a process initiated in response to the unstable situation in the Red Sea. The overwhelming choice for the alteration underscores the adventurous spirit of those onboard, willing to embrace the unexpected in pursuit of safety and new experiences. Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean, expressed his understanding of the situation, stating that the safety and well-being of guests and crew were paramount, leading to the presentation of alternative itineraries centered around the spirit of adventure that the cruise embodies.

The Serenade of the Seas embarked from Miami in early December on what was advertised as a 274-night globetrotting voyage, originally set to visit over 150 ports in 60 countries across seven continents. Due to the unforeseen itinerary changes, guests affected by the reroute around Africa will receive a 25 percent pro-rated refund of their segment cruise fare in the form of refundable onboard credit. Those opting to disembark during this segment can avail themselves of a pro-rated refund for the days not aboard the ship.

This itinerary change marks the first time Royal Caribbean International ventures into several of the African ports, introducing passengers to a diverse range of cultures, landscapes, and wildlife. The shift not only underlines the cruise line’s commitment to passenger safety but also its flexibility and willingness to adapt under unforeseen circumstances. As the Serenade of the Seas continues on its revised path, guests can look forward to a blend of leisurely sea days and vibrant port calls, exploring the rich tapestry of African and European destinations that await them.
