Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has officially announced its temporary relocation from Baltimore, Maryland, to Norfolk, Virginia, following the recent catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. This significant event occurred on March 26, 2024, when a cargo ship collided with the bridge, leading to its partial collapse. This incident has prompted an immediate and ongoing investigation and has caused a subsequent closure of the affected port facilities. As a result, Royal Caribbean has had to make sudden adjustments to its itineraries, affecting both current and future cruise operations originally scheduled to embark from Baltimore.

The Vision of the Seas, a 78,340-gross ton vessel which had plans to be based in Baltimore well into the 2025 season, will now be hosted in Norfolk for its forthcoming cruises. This encompasses two 8-night Bahamas Cruises slated to start on April 4 and April 12, alongside the conclusion of its current 12-night Southern Caribbean sailing that originally embarked on March 23. The immediate redirection to Norfolk serves as a direct response to the unforeseen bridge incident. Notably, this change of homeport aligns with actions taken by other cruise operators, such as Carnival Cruise Line, which also shifted its operations from Baltimore to Norfolk in the wake of the bridge collapse.

Despite the homeport transition, the Vision of the Seas aims to maintain its scheduled itineraries as closely as possible. The ship will still call at designated ports of call including Castries, St. Lucia; Bridgetown, Barbados; and Basseterre, St. Kitts for its current cruise. The upcoming sailings will feature stops at Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida; Freeport (Grand Island), Bahamas; Nassau, Bahamas; and Cococay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. However, the April 12 departure will replace a call to Cococay with Charleston, South Carolina, demonstrating a slight alteration to its planned route.

In a gesture of goodwill and understanding of the inconvenience caused to passengers, Royal Caribbean has announced compensatory measures to assist impacted guests. For those who have booked their travel through the company, arrangements are being automatically revised, with information provided to ensure smooth transitions. Passengers who made independent travel arrangements are advised to contact their service providers to make necessary adjustments. Royal Caribbean has pledged to reimburse up to $200 for domestic transportation changes and up to $400 for international adjustments per person, in addition to providing free Wi-Fi and phone services aboard to facilitate these changes.

The Vision of the Seas’ unexpected detour to Norfolk, Virginia, underscores the cruise line's adaptability and commitment to passenger satisfaction under unforeseen circumstances. As the ship sets sail from its new temporary homeport, guests can look forward to a seamless cruising experience with minimal disruptions to their vacation plans. Further developments regarding the reopening of Baltimore’s Port and the potential return of Vision of the Seas to its original homeport will be closely monitored and communicated in due course.
