Port Lockroy

Antarctic Peninsula

Port Lockroy is a historic bay forming a natural harbor on the north-western shore of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula. It includes the most southerly operational post office in the world. Established during World War II, the British base on Goudier Island was later renovated into a museum by the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust. Visitors can explore the museum, send postcards from the Penguin Post Office, and observe the thriving population of breeding gentoo penguins. The site has significant historical importance, being designated as a Historic Site or Monument. Tours typically combine landings at Port Lockroy with visits to nearby Jougla Point. The area's rocky terrain and breeding seabirds necessitate some agility and visitor restrictions. The souvenir shop proceeds fund the site's maintenance and penguin research by the British Antarctic Survey.
