Port of Avatiu

Arutanga, Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Arutanga Harbour, also known as Port of Avatiu, is the only mainstream operation port serving Aitutaki internationally. The port features a significant redevelopment that opened in April 2013, enhancing its capacity to accommodate larger vessels. The harbor handles about 90% of food imports and all of the country's fuel supply. For those visiting via cruise ships, activities in Aitutaki include lagoon cruises to pristine motu islands, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, and indulging in a barbecue lunch on an island or boat. Other activities include exploring inland plantations on foot or by moped, bike rentals, and organized lagoon tours that offer a comprehensive experience of the stunning lagoon. Ureia village to the north offers a lovely white church, a post office, bank, supermarkets, restaurants, and a colorful beach area for swimming and relaxing. Ootu Point at the southern tip of the island boasts a beautiful swimming beach and serves as a departure point for many island day cruises.
