Djupivogur, formerly known as Berufjordur, is a picturesque port town located on a peninsula in Austurland, eastern Iceland. Nestled between the Berufjordur and Hamarsfjordur fjords, this small town boasts a population of under 500 residents. Djupivogur is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, rugged terrain, rich vegetation, and diverse wildlife. Visitors can explore the town and its surrounding areas, including Teigarhorn farm where weather observations have been ongoing since 1874. One of the main attractions is the weather art installation named 'Eggin í Gledivík,' replicating the eggs of 34 bird species found in the region. Travelers can also embark on bus tours to Vatnajokull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its expansive glacier and unique landscapes. Djupivogur has a historical significance as a former Danish colonial trading base and a place where Hans Jonatan, an Icelandic national of African descent who escaped slavery in Denmark, found refuge in the early 19th century.
