Ducie Island
Ducie Island
Ducie Island, an uninhabited atoll in the Pitcairn Islands group, lies east of Pitcairn Island and is known as the breeding ground of numerous bird species. With a total area of 1.5 square miles, the atoll comprises four islets: Acadia, Pandora, Westward, and Edwards. It is home to more than 90% of the world's Murphy's petrel population. Visits to Ducie are rare due to its inaccessibility, but it receives one to two visits a year from cruise ships. The island has a rich history of exploration dating back to Pedro Fernandes de Queirós in 1606. Ducie's sovereignty has been a subject of dispute between the United States and the United Kingdom. The atoll offers stunning marine life, with around 138 fish species in its lagoon, including the yellow-edged lyretail and Galápagos sharks.
