Port of Galle

Galle, Sri Lanka

Port of Galle is a historic natural harbour located in the city of Galle, on the south-western coast of Sri Lanka. It serves as one of the most active regional ports in the country and is the only port in Sri Lanka that offers facilities for pleasure yachts, making it a popular destination for international yacht enthusiasts. The port has a rich history dating back to ancient times and was a significant hub for maritime trade between Europe and Asia. Today, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority is undertaking a development project to enhance the port's capabilities, including the construction of a deep water passenger terminal and a yacht marina. Maritime archaeologists are drawn to the area due to the presence of various shipwrecks from the colonial era, such as the East Indiaman Avondster and the VOC shipwreck Hercules. Visitors to the port can explore Sri Lanka's first underwater museum, located at a depth of around 15 meters, which showcases sculptures and artifacts from the area's rich maritime history and acts as an artificial coral reef to promote marine life.
