Half Moon Caye
Half Moon Caye Reserve, Belize
Half Moon Caye, located at the southwest corner of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, is a pristine crescent-shaped island and natural monument that is the first marine protected area in Central America. The island is home to a colony of 4,000 Red-footed Boobies, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Visitors can camp on the beach, go birdwatching for Frigatebirds, snorkel or dive the Half Moon Caye Wall, explore the island by foot, and kayak around the various cayes. Most visitors stay at dive resorts and take day trips to the island. Half Moon Caye doesn't have an international airport, so travelers need to fly into Philip Goldson International Airport near Belize City and then take a chartered boat to the island. The island also serves as a sea turtle nesting ground from May to November for loggerhead, hawksbill, and green turtles.
