Karrat Fjord in Nuugaatsiaq, Greenland, gained international attention after a catastrophic megatsunami on 17 June 2017 triggered by a massive landslide. The tsunami resulted in severe property damage and casualties in the tiny fishing village of Nuugaatsiaq. The seismic energy detected prior to the tsunami was first mistaken for an earthquake due to the massive landslide. The aftermath saw 45 structures, including eleven houses, washed away or destroyed, with tragic loss of life. The entire event was extensively documented, showcasing the environmental degradation, societal impacts, and the necessity for resettlement of residents. The region's continued risk of landslides and destructive tsunamis has led to the indefinite closure of Nuugaatsiaq and parts of the fjord.
