Kilwa Kisiwani, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housed one of the most powerful Swahili settlements along the East African coast. This historic port city reached its peak of prosperity in the 13th and 14th centuries, serving as a pivotal trading hub between the Swahili coast, Arabian Peninsula, India, and China. Kilwa minted its own coins, hosted a diverse range of architectural wonders including the Great Mosque and the grand palace of Husuni Kubwa.
