International Port of Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee
Located on President's Island, the International Port of Memphis is the second largest inland port on the shallow draft portion of the Mississippi River and the fifth largest inland port in the United States. It serves as a vital hub for transportation, connecting to the sea via the Mississippi River, by rail through the city's five Class 1 railroads, by road via I-40 or I-55, and by air using FedEx. The port's history dates back to 1946 when it was developed as a new industrial area with river access, separate from downtown, to support commerce. President's Island, where the port is mainly situated, was originally a flood plain but was transformed into a thriving industrial park. Several prominent companies operate at the port, including ADM Grain Company, Bunge North America, Cargill, Inc., and many more. Visitors can explore the bustling industrial activities, enjoy scenic views of the Mississippi River, and take advantage of recreational opportunities in the surrounding area.
