New Madrid County Port, located in the town of New Madrid, Missouri, is a Mississippi River cruise port with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1778 as part of Spanish Louisiana. The town has a total area of approximately 12 km2 and a population of around 3,000 residents. New Madrid sits approximately 68 km southwest of Cairo, Illinois. The region was historically known for its cotton plantations and industrial establishments, including lumber mills, a grist mill, cotton gin, and churches. The area is also famous for experiencing over 1000 earthquakes in the early 19th century, with magnitudes reaching up to 8 on the Richter scale.
