Snares Islands / Tini Heke (The Snares), New Zealand

The Snares Islands, also known as Tini Heke, is a pristine group of uninhabited islands located about 200 km south of New Zealand's South Island and to the south-southwest of Stewart Island / Rakiura. Comprising North East Island, Broughton Island, Alert Stack, and Western Chain Islands, the Snares cover a total land area of 3.4 km2. The islands are a vital Important Bird Area, with significant seabird populations including Snares penguins, Buller's albatrosses, and sooty shearwaters. Access to the islands is restricted to protect the unique biodiversity and nesting sites. The Snares are part of the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
