Port Virgin Gorda Island BVI
Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda, B.V.I.
Virgin Gorda Island is the BVI's 3rd-largest and 2nd most populous island, covering a land area of 21 km2 and hosting a population of around 4,000 residents. Spanish Town, located on the southwestern coast, is the main commercial port and largest settlement on the island. The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus and its name translates from Spanish as 'Fat Virgin' due to its unique profile resembling a reclined woman on the horizon. One of the major attractions on the island is 'The Baths', an unusual geologic formation featuring huge granite boulders forming scenic grottoes open to the sea. Other notable sites include the old Copper Mine and the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor where cruise ship passengers are tendered. North Sound, located at the island's northeastern end, is known for its spectacular harbor bordered by four isles, offering ideal conditions for watersports in its protected waters. At Gorda Sound's eastern end, the Bitter End Yacht Club provides premier anchorage, village, marina, and resort facilities, making it a popular destination for charter yachts with over 130 moorings. The anchorage off Bitter End holds historical significance as the site where fleets commanded by Sir John Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake rendezvoused in 1595. Cruise ships to Virgin Gorda BVI dock at Spanish Town, the second-largest town in BVI after Road Town on Tortola. Visitors can enjoy various attractions and activities in Spanish Town and its surroundings, making it a vibrant destination for tourists.
